HHSAA BASEBALL: Kaiser hangs on to beat Waiakea 2-1 in upset

Kaiser knocked off No. 3 seed Waiakea behind a two-run second inning and standout defense at the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA baseball state championships on Thursday. An error in that second inning allowed Kaiser to score Matthew Muranka and Mychael Kawashima.

The Kaiser fans at Les Murakami Stadium watched the final innings on the edge of their seats but the Cougars’ defense rules the day to put away the Maui Interscholastic League champion.

Zachary Wong pitched five innings and Toby Inouye worked two innings to limited Waiakea to just one run over that span.

The Cougars’ victory enables them in play in the semifinals against Pearl City at 5:30 pm at Les Murakami Stadium.
