HHSAA Division II GIRLS BASKETBALL: Campbell wins DII crown on buzzer beater

By Derek Inouchi

HONOLULU – Ariel Medlin’s lay-up at the buzzer lifted Campbell over top-seeded McKinley in overtime in the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Division II Girls Basketball Championship game Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Sabers held off a furious comeback by McKinley in the second half. The Tigers trailed by as many as 13 points in the third quarter before taking their first lead of the game at 48-46 with just over a minute to play in regulation. The Sabers sent the game to overtime with a lay-up by Kaitlynn Simmonds.

In the extra period, the Sabers used a pair of three-point plays to take a 55-50 lead. But the Tigers battled back and tied it at 55 with a pair of free throws by Allyson Villanueva. On the Sabers’ final possession, Aloha Dias-Kekahuna had two attempts from close range before Medlin’s putback as time expired.
