Non-League FOOTBALL: Farrington outlasts Wai'anae, 37-23

By Wes Nakama

Abraham Silva rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns and Montana Liana completed 13 of 22 passes for 132 yards and another TD on Saturday to help Farrington rally past Wai'anae, 37-23, in nonleague football action at Radford's John Velasco Stadium.

It was the season opener for both perennial powerhouses.

The Governors broke a 16-16 tie on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Montana Liana threw a perfect strike to James Hashimoto on a crossing pattern for 31-yard touchdown on fourth-and-5.

Shanelle Atabay Carillo's extra point made it 23-16, and on the next series, a bad punt snap led to a blocked Wai'anae punt that was recovered in the end zone by Farrington's Syndreck Dsio.

Atabay-Carillo's PAT made it 30-16 with 9:24 remaining, and after a three-and-out on the Seariders' next possession, Jackie Anakalea capped a 13-play, 65-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to effectively seal the victory with 1:49 left.

Wai'anae struck back quickly with a long kickoff return followed by Kekoa Kaluhiokalani's 3-yard TD pass to Po'okela Noa-Nakamoto with 1:17 remaining, but elected not to try an onside kick, allowing the Govs to run out the clock.

Farrington running back Tyler Taumua, who led the state in rushing last season, did not suit up for the game while resting a shoulder injury.

But it mattered little as Silva, an explosive 5-foot-10, 212-pound senior, made an immediate impact with a 61-yard touchdown scamper on his very first carry to help the Governors take a quick 7-0 lead barely two minutes into the game.

The Seariders answered with a six-play, 71-yard drive culminating in Kaluhiokalani's 3-yard TD pass to Keanu Chung with 7:47 left, and Jacoby Cid's extra point tied it at 7-7.

Farrington went up, 10-7, on Justin Tamashiro's 27-yard field goal two minutes into the second quarter, but Wai'anae tied it at 10-10 at the 7:13 mark on a 27-yard field goal by Cid and and then took a 13-10 lead on Cid's 22-yarder through the uprights with 4:07 left. Cid then connected on a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half to make it 16-10.

The Govs tied it at 16-16 on Silva's 10-yard touchdown scamper to the left side, but the PAT attempt failed.
