HHSAA Division I FOOTBALL: Saint Louis claims division I football championship crown

By Wes Nakama

Marcus Mariota completed 17 of 23 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns Friday night as Saint Louis defeated Wai‘anae, 36-13, to win its first First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I Football State Championship since 2002.

A crowd of 12,309 at Aloha Stadium watched the Crusaders finish the season at 11-1. The Seariders, making their first state title game appearance, ended up at 6-8.

Saint Louis took the lead barely four minutes into the game, on Mariota’s 13-yard TD pass to Joshua Tupua followed by Aaron Goo’s extra point to make it 7-0. The Crusaders extended it to 13-0 midway through the first quarter on Mariota’s 79-yard strike to Jeremy Tabuyo. The extra point attempt failed.

Wai‘anae cut it to 13-7 after the first play of the second quarter, a 14-yard touchdown pass from Puletua Wilson to twin brother James on fourth-and-6, followed by Shaughn Spencer’s PAT.

Saint Louis answered with a six-play, 73-yard drive capped by Keanu Mook-Garcia’s 1-yard scoring plunge, then went up, 23-7, on Goo’s 40-yard field goal 30 seconds before halftime.
